Environmental Stewards - Facing the Leadership Challenge
Speaker: Merlene Mazyck, Deputy Director (acting), Recreation, Heritage & Volunteer Resources, USDA Forest Service
Come hear Merlene Mazyck, Deputy Director (acting), Recreation, Heritage & Volunteer Resources (RHVR), USDA Forest Service, share the importance of solving the diversity leadership gap in green and STEM fields, and learn about specific approaches that can close that gap. Prior to her role as Deputy Director (acting), Ms. Mazyck was the national program manager for Volunteers and Service at the Forest Service (USFS). She is a youth service enthusiast, and with her various roles, she has offered policy guidance and strategic leadership for over 100,000 volunteers and service members working across 175 national forests and grasslands for 8 years.

Speaker: Sam Fulwood III, Columnist, ThinkProgress
Does pop culture have a role in solving environmental challenges? Listen to Sam Fulwood III, an award-winning journalist, discuss the intersection of race, environmental equity, and pop culture. Mr. Fulwood is a columnist at ThinkProgress who writes stories that focus on how the nation's politics and domestic policies affect communities of color across the United States. Currently the author of two impactful books:Waking from the Dream: My Life in the Black Middle Class (Anchor, 1996) and Full of It: Strong Words and Fresh Thinking for Cleveland (Gray & Company, 2004), Mr. Fulwood is a thought-leader regarding public policy's impact on race. Before joining ThinkProgress, Mr. Fulwood was a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and director and founder of its Leadership Institute, a program designed to assist with the advancement of people of color in public policy.
